On Thursday 4 July (date subject to boat repairs) Sailors with disABILITIES will again embark on our annual Northern Campaign. As a volunteer, not-for-profit organisation SWD rely on a dedicated team of special volunteers to head North for the winter seeking warmer weather and allowing SWD to provide their free sailing days to children, young people and adults with a disability and disadvantaged children along the way. The purpose is to provide inspiration and opportunity, building self-confidence and a sense of achievement through the medium of sailing.
This year, 2013 will be the 16th Northern Campaign, SWD are proud to have not missed a year. In fact SWD have participated in more Northern Campaigns than Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races!!
During the 2013 Northern Campaign SWD will visit Southport, Bundaberg, Mackay, Gladstone, Coffs Harbour and Newcastle. Our volunteer crew will all board on the 52 foot Lyons grand prix offshore racing yacht “Kayle” for the entirety of the campaign. The Yacht 'Kayle' is custom designed and ergonomically sensitive to the needs of the disabled, being able to accommodate up to 5 wheelchairs.
With volunteers tag teaming along the way to ensure sufficient man power for every port. Simply the Northern Campaign would not exist without their generousity.
SWD Thank all volunteers involved in the program (in alphabetical order): Allan Grundy, Bill Salmon, Bill Young, Bob Bunton, Chris Bleach, Craig Hammond, David D'Annunzio, Ed Goddard, Gary Donovan, Glenn Miller, Gordon Gibson, Gordon Reid, Gordon Smith, Jason Thomas, Jim Igoe, Keven Rainbow, Kevin Douglas, Kevin Moore, Lisa Craig, Lucy Reid, Matthew Bowolick, Nathalie Neveu, Neville Watson, Norm Walsh, Paul Clark, Ron Parry, Todd Bleach.
During the Northern Campaign SWD will offer the free Try Sail sessions every day from Monday thru Friday with two sessions each day. Each session can accommodate 15 people including up to 5 wheelchairs. Over the 8 week Northern Campaign SWD will provide 61 Try Sail sessions. A total of 884 people, including 605 school children with a disability will experience the opportunity to sail a real racing yacht, an exciting and exhilarating sailing experience. Further 79 people in wheelchairs will be able to board an ocean racing yacht and experience something they never dreamed to be possible. The hope of SWD is that the experience will allow people with a disability to experience what is possible, say I Can and go on to make a great contribution to society.
For most program participants this is their FIRST time on the water and something that was not previously considered as a possibility. Wonder, smiles and laughter is how SWD would describe a day with the novice school sailors.
GOOD LUCK CREW AND THANK YOU!!
