SWD-faceboat Members News June 2014

Creating change for 20 years

New faceboat community website

So many people love the faceboat project and wanted to tell the story behind their photo that we decided to add a new element to faceboat - an online community.

Just like our on-water community, our faceboat online community is a supportive, inclusive place where members can share stories and information.

On the new website you can... upload stories and blogs, comment on stories and blogs, make friends and interact with fellow members.

With your help we will grow faceboat into an inclusive, supportive place to visit and share information with like-minded people.

Thank you to a number of inspirational SWD members and supporters who have already shared their stories with us - hover over their image on the home page to read the stories. Right now Al Grundy's the most popular story - it's a great read!

Creating change on the water

We have just completed the third Winds of Change program for 2014 with 10 disadvantaged kids from the John Berne School.

Skipper Sharon Angel and her team of SWD volunteers – Stephen Emmett, Peter Behr, Andrew King, Ian Wyard, and Susan Talty have enjoyed a challenging and rewarding few weeks with several participants starting to engage by the end of the course.

The CYCA winter series is a fantastic opportunity for participants to learn from SWD mentors, sharpen their sailing skills and gel with their team-mates. Here are some great photos of the teams on Kayle and Wot Eva.

The crew on Kayle recently ventured offshore for their first overnighter. A great opportunity for David Leslie and his crew to spend time together practicing watches and routines at sea.

We are delighted that several members from ‘Soldier On’ have joined for training and race days.

Carers Days start again on Sunday's in October - let us know if you know a group who could do with a treat.

Here's just some of what's happening behind the scenes to keep SWD out on the water.

Congratulations to all the participants who completed the recent Sea Safety and Survivial course - well done to Ian Wyard for oganising this.

Welcome to new volunteers Lisa Beaumont and Yvonne Kaiser-Glass who are working hard on website and social media content. Great to have you both on board.

Raffle tickets are selling steadily and the prize raffle boat has now arrived in Australia. Here are some photos of the first stages of commissioning. It's fantastic to think someone will win this yacht for just $100!

Thanks to everyone who has sent photos to the Dick Smith Charity appeal. We have moved up the table significantly thanks to your help. If you haven't had a chance to add your photo the deadline for the first round is 30th June. More details here

Yacht Updates

A recent government grant means Moksha can be refitted with higher lifelines and other modifications appropriate to SWD’s operational safety standards.

In preparation for the Northern Campaign all Kayle's safety gear has been checked and updated. Flares and fire extinguishers have been checked and the crew will be issued with inflatable life jackets and personal EPIRBs.

Wot Eva will participate in this year’s 29th Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race which departs Sydney 29 July and is the first race in the CYCA’s 2014 – 2015 Blue Water Pointscore Series.

As part of the maintenance program for the big race her safety gear is being recommissioned and her hull has been cleaned and painted.
